The state of Washington is ahead of most other states in requiring employers to protect their employees experiencing domestic violence by giving them reasonable time off to attend court and ensure their family's afety. The Domestic Violence Leave Act was passed in 2008.
An eastern Washington woman has sued her former employer for failing to provide time off to deal with a domestic violence case and ultimately fired her.
